Strong Floor, No Ceiling

A new American Dream from the Radical Center.

A plain-spoken, evidence-led case for a new political center: one that puts a foundation of housing, healthcare, childcare, and opportunity under every American, and removes the regulatory and economic ceilings that hold us back from building, earning, and rising together.

Every copy — and every review — helps the Strong Floor, No Ceiling message reach more Americans. If the book resonated with you, take a minute to share why.

Why This, Why Now

The American Dream was never a guarantee. It was a promise. And it can be true in an America with a Strong Floor and No Ceiling.

01 What's Happening

America is angry, frustrated, and adrift. The affordability crisis and income inequality are compounding the decades-long failure of trust in our leaders, institutions, media, and more. The headlines every day stoke fear, not hope. For too many of us, the American Dream feels distant or broken (if it was ever true).

02 What's Needed

In this challenging moment, anger, blame, and opposition alone cannot deliver lasting change, or a commanding governing majority. If we want a true realignment — a seismic shift that rebuilds trust and wins sustainably — we need a simple message that is credible, actionable, inspiring, and hopeful.

03 Why This

The Strong Floor, No Ceiling movement exists to build an America where people are supported from falling through the cracks and empowered to rise as high as their effort and ambition may take them. We have always been a society that cares about our neighbor and wants opportunity for all.

The Core Message

We need a Strong Floor and No Ceiling in America.

No one in America should be homeless, no kid hungry, no one bankrupted by a hospital bill, and no one working hard their whole lives and unable to retire and leave their kids better off than they were. America should also be a place of hope and success, building the most incredible companies, large and small; amazing innovations and technologies that define the future; and the world’s strongest middle class.

The solutions are staring us in the face. We need to strengthen Medicare, Medicaid, and social security, not slash them. We need people to get an education without drowning in debt. We need people to feel safe in their communities. We need people to have homes they can afford; lives they can afford. We need people to have good-paying jobs and have a shot at achieving their dreams. We need a strong floor, with no cracks, to make sure no one falls down, and everyone can stand up and reach higher.

We need a strong floor, with no cracks, to make sure no one falls down, and everyone can stand up and reach higher.

People are going to say we can’t afford this. They will say that all we have to do is stay angry. They will say that there is only so much to go around, so it’s everyone for themselves, which means either leaving those in need with no help, or capping success. This is wrong. That’s not how we got through the 1930s to a New Deal; through the 1960s to a Great Society, onto the Moon, and growing the economic pie with historic companies like GM, Ford, Apple, Google, and more.

According to MAGA, we’re supposed to go back somewhere we once were. That’s not possible because there is no “again”—there is only what is ahead. We have never had a Strong Floor and No Ceiling. That is a future we should fight for: an American Dream that can be true for everyone.

Strong Floor, No Ceiling is a hopeful, practical framework that reconnects fairness with ambition, restores belief in upward mobility, and gives Americans something worth believing in—and voting for—again.

In Plain Terms

What a Strong Floor and No Ceiling mean

What is the “Strong Floor”?

A Strong Floor is one that no American should fall below, and on which they can stand to reach into the middle class and beyond. Its planks include the keys to opportunity: healthcare, education, good-paying jobs, housing, safety, justice, and affordability. A Strong Floor for America does not mean everything is free or even that everyone gets the same outcome. It means folks should have enough; they should have a hand up from their government; and that we should make sure that this is true for every American. The Strong Floor is an investment in a healthier, more talented, more productive society.

What is “No Ceiling”?

It’s not enough just to have a floor. There must be something to work toward. No Ceiling means that if you work hard, play by the rules, and contribute fairly, your success should not be artificially capped. Innovation, entrepreneurship, and success are good for the country, and the key to making sure that the pie of economic opportunity is getting bigger. No ceiling does not mean no rules, no taxes, or no accountability. It means ambition within a fair system—where those who benefit most help sustain the foundation that made their success possible.

Our Framework

The policies

From SFNC-aligned leaders to you, there is no expectation that you agree with every policy we are suggesting. SFNC is a flexible framework — adapt it to your community! But taken altogether, these policies add up to the America we want to live in.

What follows is a set of samples, not the argument. Strong Floor, No Ceiling runs to 75,000 words — the evidence, the trade-offs, and the detail behind every one of these policies are in the book. Read the book →
